Which average is the right one for you
Almost every English-language article about medical costs in China quotes the all-hospital average of ¥¥9,768.9 per admission. That figure is not wrong, but it is not about you either.
Every international department in China operates inside or alongside a tertiary (Grade III) hospital — that is a regulatory requirement, not a coincidence. For those hospitals the official average is ¥11,539.7 per admission, about 18% higher.
And both numbers are still *averages across all payers and all procedures*. An international patient is billed self-pay, usually in a private or international ward, and will pay more than either.

Converted at a rate from Oct 3, 2026, which is more than 3 days old. Every figure above is published by the National Health Commission in renminbi; the local-currency value is a convenience, and the renminbi figure is the one to rely on.
For scale: China has 38,159 hospitals, of which 11,678 are public, handling roughly 10.7 billion billion patient visits and 27.1 million admissions a year.
Published procedure prices
Real, schedulable prices from an official municipal schedule. These are procedure lines for a standard public ward — not international-department prices, and not totals. See the warning below before using any of them.
A published price is the procedure line, never the invoice. Beijing's schedule for inguinal hernia repair (¥560) explicitly excludes sutures, haemostatic materials, drains, the laparoscope and its consumables, staplers, clips, energy devices, anti-adhesion film, glue — plus the repair mesh, the fixation device, and the clean operating theatre itself. All of those are billed on top. The same applies to every surgical line below.

Published daily rates. The spread across room types is small — a single room costs ¥30 more than a shared one — while the spread across ward classes is 22 times. The multiplier in a Chinese hospital is ward class, not privacy.

Two things these prices are not. They are not a quote: no hospital on this site has quoted a price to us, and a quote from one hospital says nothing about another. And they are not a total: a procedure line excludes the ward, the drugs, the consumables and the operating theatre, all of which are priced separately on this page.

Why we cannot give you a single number
We looked for a published international-department price list at national, provincial and individual hospital level. It does not exist — and that is a finding, not a gap we have left unfilled.
China publishes fee schedules for standard hospital services （医疗服务价格项目）. Those are set province by province, not nationally. International departments and self-pay services sit outside those schedules, and the hospitals that set them have not published them.
This is not speculation. Beijing's healthcare security bureau maintains a public register of hospitals that file their own prices for newly added services （自主定价备案表）— and the price cells in that register are frequently empty. The filing is public; the number is disclosed to the patient on request.
The clearest example is Peking Union Medical College Hospital, which runs a dedicated international department opened in 1951. Its own price-disclosure page states, in Chinese: 北京协和医院严格按照《北京市统一医疗服务收费标准》及相关政策文件所列项目向患者收取费用 — it charges strictly according to Beijing's published schedule. So for a Beijing hospital like PUMCH, the publicly citable price for a procedure *is* the Beijing municipal price, and anyone quoting you a “PUMCH international price” has gone further than the hospital itself publishes.
What this means for you. You cannot research a Chinese international department's prices from public sources, and neither can the hospital's own website in most cases. The only reliable figure is a written quotation obtained by contacting the department — which is why the international department contact details on each hospital page on this site matter more than any number we could have printed.
Why your quote will be higher than these numbers
Three separate things drive the gap, and only one of them is about money.
An international department is not priced off the national schedule. The published government schedule and what an international patient is charged are two different tables, and the second one is set by the hospital.
1. The case is complex
People come to China for cases that are difficult, late-stage, or beyond what was accessible at home. That costs more wherever you are treated. The cost advantage is real, but it narrows sharply for the hardest cases.
2. International departments price separately
China's statutory fee schedules govern standard services. International department and self-pay services are market-set by each individual hospital and are not published. As above, this is a documented fact rather than an assumption.
3. Ward class, not room type
Ward cost is a daily charge, so it compounds across your stay. But the counter-intuitive finding from Beijing's published schedule is that a single room costs only ¥80/day against ¥50 for a general bed — while a special protective ward costs ¥1,100/day. Ward class drives the multiplier; privacy does not.

The price list
Chinese hospitals publish the items they charge for under 医疗服务价格项目, and the table above is one city's version of that published list. It is the list that a Chinese patient who pays in full is charged against. What an international patient is charged is set separately by the international department, which is why the number you are quoted will not match the schedule.
The deposit
Chinese hospitals ask for money up front — a deposit held against your account and settled when you leave. The amount is set by the hospital, for that admission, and it is not a published price, so we do not print one: any deposit figure on this page would be a guess, and the guess would be wrong for most readers. Ask for the amount in writing before you travel, and ask what happens to it if your treatment ends early.
Direct billing and insurance
Whether a hospital bills your insurer directly, or takes payment from you and lets you claim back, is an arrangement between that hospital and that insurer. We have read the international-department page of every hospital on this site that publishes one, and we publish what those pages say: the insurers they name, and the hospitals that say they bill insurers directly without naming anyone. The list is the hospital's own claim — we did not check any of these arrangements with the insurer.
Four questions to ask before you book
Each of these gets you a written answer from the hospital. Nothing on this page can.
- Do you have a dedicated international department, and will it see a patient who is paying for themselves?
- Do you bill international insurers directly, or do I pay and claim back?
- Can you give me a written estimate before I book, and what is the deposit?
- Will my records and discharge summary be in English?
Send those four questions to the hospital's international department in writing, before you travel, and keep the answers. A written answer from the hospital is worth more than any estimate on this page, including the ones we have published.
How to read a cost figure on this site
- Published in CNY, shown in USD. We convert for readability using the rate dated above. The CNY figure is the real published number; the converted figure is not a quoted rate.
- Ranges, not points. Chinese hospitals publish fee ranges. A range is genuinely uncertain, and presenting the midpoint as a price would be a lie.
- Every figure carries a source and an “as of” date. If data has gone stale we flag it rather than showing an old number as current.
- We show gaps. Where a hospital has not published a price, we say so instead of substituting a national average that does not apply to them.

About the “eight times cheaper” claim
Comparative claims about treatment being dramatically cheaper in China almost always compare a standard Chinese price against an insured American price. Those are not the two numbers you will be choosing between.
The honest comparison is your likely *self-pay international-department* cost in China against your likely *self-pay* cost elsewhere. That advantage is still substantial for many procedures. It is not unlimited.
