The First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University

For a patient coming from Southeast Asia or Central Asia, this is the hospital to start with. Kunming is China's closest major medical hub to Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, and this hospital has the deepest regional practice of any institution we know of.

The evidence is unusually concrete. The hospital's own Chinese profile states it is the Yunnan International Diagnosis & Treatment Health Cooperation Centre and a provincial international diagnosis & treatment service pilot unit, and that it 设有独立的国际医学部 — it has an independent International Medical Department. That is a named department in the hospital's own words, not an inference from a foreign-affairs office. The English site gives its location on the 20th floor of Building 3 and dedicated international contacts.

Its cross-border record backs the claim. It runs the "光明行" (Guangmingxing) cataract-restoration programme in neighbouring countries for several consecutive years, having helped more than 1,400 overseas cataract patients regain sight. Its medical aid team to Uganda won the national award for *Advanced Collective in Assisting Foreign Medical Work*. It has sent more than 300 medical and administrative staff overseas for study and advanced degrees, and holds long-term relationships with institutions in several countries.

Scale and standing: founded 1941, 4,700 open beds across three campuses, 6,500+ staff, 73 clinical and medical-technology departments, 13 national key specialty projects, and an A+ rating in the national tertiary hospital performance assessment for seven consecutive years. 2025 volumes were 4 million outpatient visits, 206,000 discharges and 89,000 surgeries.

One discrepancy to know about: the hospital's own English and Chinese pages disagree on some figures — the English page says 2,536 beds and 77 departments, the Chinese profile says 4,700 open beds and 73 departments. We publish the Chinese figures as the more likely current ones and flag the disagreement rather than picking silently.

Before you rely on this: Outpatient access is real-name appointment only, and the stated booking route requires a national identity card: patients must complete real-name registration with an ID card before they can book, and only a 7-day slot cycle is ever open. A foreign patient without a Chinese national ID has no published route to register, so the hospital's own booking process does not reach them.
