Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital

Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital is the most prestigious hospital in Nanjing. Founded in 1892 as the Macklin Hospital by the Canadian Presbyterian missionary and physician William E. Macklin, it is one of the earliest Western hospitals in China — and its 1892 ward building is now a national key cultural relic.

It holds 15 national key disciplines and national clinical key specialties, the largest such cluster reported for any hospital in Jiangsu, and is the first hospital in China certified as an International Advanced Stroke Centre by the World Stroke Organization. Its case-mix index is 1.61 with over 40% of surgery in the most complex tier, and it has run an A++ national performance rating for seven consecutive years.

A distinction worth being precise about: this hospital belongs to Nanjing University, not Nanjing Medical University. It is also worth being precise about something else — it has extensive documented international activity, including friendly-hospital relationships in 13 countries, cooperation with Johns Hopkins and UChicago Medicine, and a full English website, but no named international department (国际部) could be confirmed. Those are different things, and a patient booking travel on the strength of an English website would be misled.
