Overview

PUMCH is the most famous hospital in China and the institution most international patients mean when they say "the best hospital in China". It was founded in 1921 with Rockefeller Foundation funding and belongs to the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences — the country's most prestigious medical research body — and Peking Union Medical College.

Its International Medical Services department predates almost everything else in Chinese medical tourism: it began as a ward for foreign diplomats in 1951, so it has been treating English-speaking patients for over seventy years. That institutional longevity is the substantive difference. Its Dongdan campus runs independent outpatient clinics, a 24-hour emergency service, and more than 200 wards including single rooms and suites, with outpatient cover across 30-plus clinical specialties. A separate Xidan campus focuses on gynaecological endocrinology and reproduction, cosmetic medicine, breast surgery and stomatology.

On clinical breadth it holds 29 national key clinical specialties across 64 clinical and medical-technology departments, with 12 national key disciplines and five national "double first-class" disciplines. It is designated by the National Health Commission as a guiding centre for complex and severe disorders.

Before you rely on this: The international medical department runs appointment-only, time-slot outpatient care, so a patient cannot simply walk in and be seen; the department states that for a non-emergency outpatient visit a nurse will arrange a doctor according to that day's available outpatient doctors, meaning the named doctor is not guaranteed. Only the 24/7 emergency unit takes patients without a prior appointment.
