Suzhou's flagship hospital descends from 博习医院 (Boxi Hospital), a missionary hospital that formally opened on 8 November 1883 after the American Methodist Episcopal missionary Lan Hua-de and his brother-in-law Dr. Park raised church and local funding to build it. It is one of the Ministry of Health's first batch of Grade III-A hospitals and holds the formal provincial role of medical guidance centre for southern Jiangsu (苏南地区医疗指导中心).
It has 1,727 beds and 3,053 staff including 210 full-senior and 386 associate-senior specialists, and operates under both nameplates 苏州大学附属第一医院 and 苏州市第一人民医院 — one institution, two plates, since 1979. The Pingjiang campus opened in August 2015 and hosts interventional radiology.

The Second Affiliated Hospital of Soochown University — a separate institution on a nearby street — does have a named international outpatient department.
