Anhui Provincial Hospital was absorbed into the University of Science and Technology of China on 23 December 2017 and is now USTC's First Affiliated Hospital. Any directory still listing it as independent, or as affiliated with Anhui Medical University, is out of date — USTC is a C9 double-first-class research university and is the stronger affiliation by a wide margin.
It is the oldest hospital one of the oldest surviving Western-founded hospitals in the region, founded in 1898 when the missionary ophthalmologist Dr James Butchart of the Disciples of Christ in China purchased land in Hefei and built what was locally called the "South Gate Western Building", completed in 1902. It was the largest hospital in the Luzhou region at the time, and ran a refugee shelter for over 300 people during the Japanese occupation of Hefei in 1938.
It is a five-campus system with 2,200 beds, and the campus structure is genuinely useful for a medical traveller: the South District holds the Anhui Provincial Brain Hospital and the Anhui Provincial Cardiovascular Hospital, the West District holds the Anhui Cancer Hospital, and the North District hosts the National Regional Trauma Medical Center.
