The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University

By physical scale this is the largest Grade III-A hospital in China: 8,500 beds across 738 mu, 95 clinical and medical-technology departments and 236 wards, handling over 6.9 million outpatient visits, 520,000 discharges and 305,000 operations a year with more than 12,000 staff. Chinese media have dubbed it "the world's largest hospital" — that is a scale label, not a quality judgement, and it is worth holding the two apart.

Clinically it is strong. It holds 20 national clinical key specialties, hosts the State Key Laboratory for Esophageal Cancer Prevention and Treatment, has transplant capability across heart, liver, kidney, lung, pancreas, small intestine, cornea and skin, and its paediatric renal transplant programme has topped the national list for five consecutive years. Its reproductive medicine programme claims the first healthy baby born using technology to block a balanced chromosomal translocation. Da Vinci robotic surgery is used across urology, gynaecology, hepatobiliary, GI and thoracic surgery.

The most important thing on this page for an international patient: it has no international department. The hospital's English site is substantive and has a full navigation, and nowhere does it name an International Department or 国际部; its Chinese site makes no claim of 涉外医疗 either. The hospital hosts around 200 international students a year and has 20 provincial international joint laboratories — that is teaching and research activity, not a clinical service for foreign patients. Size and an English website are not the same thing as accessibility, and this is the case where conflating them would do real harm.

One more correction worth knowing: the West Campus opened in July 2024 but stopped taking clinical patients on 20 November 2025 and is being converted to research use, so it should not be treated as a patient-facing campus.

Before you rely on this: Being the largest hospital in China does not mean it is set up to receive foreign patients. It has no named international department, and you should expect to arrange translation, scheduling and payment yourself.
