Overview

West China Hospital is the largest and most prestigious hospital in western China, and the centre of gravity for anyone travelling to Chengdu for serious treatment. It traces its origins to Renji Hospital and Cunren Hospital, founded in Chengdu in 1892 by the Church Missionary Society, with its medical school following in 1914 as West China Union University School of Medicine — one of the oldest Western-style medical schools in China.

It holds 9 Ministry of Education national key disciplines, 12 national key cultivation disciplines and the State Key Laboratory of Biotherapy, with 4,900 beds across three campuses and a deep talent bench: one CAS academician, 49 national-level leading-talent holders, 84 national youth-talent holders and 42 national society chair or vice-chair specialists.

Its special-needs medical centre was established in May 2018, succeeding a Health Gold Card service founded in 1994. It is a membership-based, foreign-facing institution running across the main, Wenjiang and Tianfu campuses with separate outpatient and inpatient services. Separately, its International Medical Center offers international consultation through the West China platform, connecting patients with overseas resources including Mayo Clinic, Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, Memorial Sloan Kettering and the US National Cancer Institute, with West China physicians managing the whole second-opinion process and follow-up.
