The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University (FAH-SYSU) is one of the oldest and largest tertiary hospitals in southern China, tracing its origins to a public hospital attached to Guangdong Public Medical School in 1910. It holds 5 national key disciplines and 36 national key clinical specialties — one of the broadest accredited specialty portfolios in the country.
What distinguishes it clinically is transplant surgery. FAH-SYSU performed the world's first ischaemia-free liver transplant in 2017 and the first ischaemia-free heart transplant in 2021, and the technique was written into global transplant guidelines in 2023. It also holds China's first kidney transplant and performed China's first conjoined-twin separation.
