Founded on 4 November 1835 as the Ophthalmic Hospital by the American medical missionary Peter Parker, this is the first Western hospital established in China. Renamed the Canton Hospital in 1866, it also founded the first Western medical school in China — where Sun Yat-sen himself studied medicine.
It was the first Grade III-A hospital in Guangzhou, rated in August 1993. The North campus in Yuexiu is positioned as a head and neck disease centre and a neurological rehabilitation centre; the South campus in Haizhu operates as an oncology diagnosis and treatment centre. A campus at Huadu opened in December 2024 as the Guangzhou Airport Medical Centre.
