The Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center is among the four oldest cancer hospitals in the People's Republic of China and the single most significant cancer institution in southern China. It hosts the State Key Laboratory of Oncology in South China and has been a WHO Cancer Research Cooperation Centre since 1980.
Oncology is not a department here; it is the whole institution. The Ministry of Health has run the national clinical oncology training programme through it since 1964, training more than 5,000 oncology professionals. In the 2023 Fudan specialty reputation ranking it placed second nationally in oncology with an A+++ rating, across 2,239 beds.
For an international patient the practical advantage is unusual: the International Medical Center operates as an independently managed zone within the Yuexiu campus with dedicated consulting rooms, and the centre was selected into Guangdong's first batch of international medical service pilot hospitals.
Before you rely on this: Outpatient care is 100% appointment-only with no walk-in, and the booking window is only one week (slots released at 15:00/16:00 daily), so a patient cannot book a named specialist more than seven days out. The English-language guide further states that registering on the hospital's app or WeChat requires a Chinese mobile phone number, and that every medical document is issued only in Chinese with no translation service offered, so the patient must arrange their own translation.
