Huashan Hospital

If you are an international patient and can choose one hospital in China on the strength of international-department capability alone, choose Huashan. Its International Medical Center has been operating since 1989 — one of the earliest such institutions in the country — and has handled more than one million outpatient visits from over 100 countries and regions, with roughly half of those patients overseas. It treats the largest number of foreign inpatients of any institution in Shanghai.

The operational detail that matters most to a patient is insurance. The centre provides direct billing with approximately 100 insurers (more than 30 under formal contract) and is a designated medical provider for the consulates of ten countries in Shanghai. That is a materially different experience from paying out of pocket and claiming afterwards. It also offers vaccination, health management and cross-border medical evacuation, and provides medical cover for the APEC summits, the Shanghai Five, the Expo and the CIIE.

It also led the drafting of Shanghai's own local standard for international medical services, DB31/T 1487-2024, in force from 1 October 2024 — which is a fair proxy for how seriously the city takes this service.

Clinically it is a national leader: 20 national key clinical specialties, ten Ministry of Education national key disciplines, two state key laboratories, and three national medical centres — for nervous system disease, for infectious diseases, and the National Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Diseases. National performance assessment grade A++.

Before you rely on this: Huashan's expert clinics, which include the special-needs expert clinics, are fully appointment-only: expert slots open only two weeks before the visit, weekends and national holidays are not bookable at all, and one patient may hold no more than two departments' slots at a time. On the day the patient must produce the original of a valid identity document together with the confirmation SMS, otherwise the slot is cancelled at the desk and identity details cannot be corrected on site; two no-shows inside six months block all further booking for six months. For insurance direct-settlement, this is the strongest-documented hospital in China. Confirm with the centre which of your insurer's products it contracts with before you travel — the insurer list is long but your specific policy still has to be one of them.
