Founded in 1844, Renji Hospital is the first Western hospital in China after Shanghai opened as a treaty port — two years before Shanghai General Hospital. It runs four campuses, including one in the Lujiazui financial district, and is co-located with the Shanghai Cancer Institute.

It has 55 clinical and technical departments, 2,250 beds across the campuses and 3,458 staff, and houses the State Key Laboratory of Cancer Genes and Related Genes. The hospital's international medical service, published under the heading 仁济医院国际医疗 and listed in the hospital's own site navigation as 国际门诊. The service signs itself in English, on its own reception desk, as the Renji International Medical Service and the OSJSM International Family Medicine Clinic of the Ottawa-Shanghai Joint School of Medicine. It was set up in October 2015 as that international family medicine clinic, and the hospital describes it as the first international family medicine clinic within a tertiary public hospital framework in China. It draws on the hospital's own departments for specialty care across 54 clinical specialties, among them general practice, urology, gastroenterology, rheumatology, gynaecology, gastrointestinal surgery, liver surgery, nephrology, biliary-pancreatic surgery, endocrinology, dermatology and psychiatry. The hospital states that it has signed direct-billing agreements with some insurers -- and that patients with no commercial insurance are equally welcome to select its services and pay for them themselves. It is run on a shared-resource model across three campuses, the East, West and South, with the same standard of care at each. Registration and the insurance claim form are handled at a dedicated outpatient desk, a member of staff accompanies the patient to the consulting room, and the same desk helps with blood tests, examinations, treatment and collection of medicine afterwards.

Getting to Shanghai

Shanghai Pudong International Airport (also SHA, Hongqiao)

Pudong is ~60 min by Maglev or metro Line 2 to central hospitals. Hongqiao is far closer (~20-30 min) and often more convenient for medical travel. Note Pudong and Hongqiao are on opposite sides of the city.
