Overview

The First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University was founded in 1939 as the affiliated hospital of Zhongzheng Medical College, and after the liberation became a PLA teaching hospital before passing to local administration and, when Jiangxi Medical College merged with Nanchang University in 2005, taking its present name. Its own introduction calls it one of the first Grade III-A hospitals in China, integrating medical care, teaching, research, preventive health care, health management and promotion, with a building area of 734,000 square metres and 5,550 authorised beds.

The hospital's introduction reports that in 2025 it handled 5.6 million outpatient and emergency visits, discharged 337,400 patients and performed 124,500 operations, with 43.64 per cent of those being level three and four operations. It names 13 national key clinical specialties — gastroenterology, burns, respiratory and critical care medicine, neurosurgery, pain medicine, emergency medicine, cardiovascular surgery, critical care medicine, rehabilitation medicine, general surgery, thoracic surgery, orthopaedics and a pathology centre — plus 24 provincial key clinical specialties and 31 provincial leading medical disciplines.

The hospital's own pages say it is the host institution of the Jiangxi Provincial Institute of Clinical Medical Sciences, with eight national clinical medical research centre branch units, seven provincial clinical medical research centres, 11 provincial key laboratories, two provincial engineering technology research centres, one provincial engineering research centre and seven provincial research institutes. Over the past three years it was approved for 246 National Natural Science Foundation projects and 416 provincial or ministerial projects, with funding of 200 million yuan, and in 2025 it published 756 SCI papers.
