Nanchang University Second Affiliated Hospital was founded in 1927 as the earliest comprehensive public hospital in Jiangxi Province, and has developed into a modern Grade III-A general hospital integrating medical care, teaching, research, preventive health care, emergency care and rehabilitation. Its own introduction says it runs two main campuses, the Donghu and Hongjiaozhou campuses, with 3,516 open beds, 57 clinical and medical technical departments and 4,725 staff, of whom 4,582 are technical personnel, or 97 per cent.

The hospital's introduction reports that it scored A+ in the national Grade III public hospital performance assessment for seven consecutive years from 2018 to 2024, ranking 19th nationally in 2020, the best result in Jiangxi's history. It names 23 national and provincial key clinical specialties — including cardiology, neurosurgery, oncology, general surgery, anaesthesiology, respiratory medicine and cardiac surgery — 28 provincial leading medical disciplines and nine provincial medical quality control centres.

For 2025 the hospital's introduction reports 3.28 million outpatient and emergency visits, 216,700 discharged patients and 83,400 operations, with 28.79 per cent being level four operations, an average length of stay of 6.37 days and a CMI value of 1.5. It says the hospital runs more than 200 specialty and disease clinics and 136 multidisciplinary team clinics covering over 100 diseases, and that 22 of its disciplines entered the national STEM top 100 in 2023 with five ranked in the national top 50.
