Peking University Cancer Hospital

Peking University Cancer Hospital — the Beijing Cancer Hospital, the Beijing Municipal Institute of Cancer Prevention and Treatment, and the Peking University School of Oncology — was founded in 1976 and is jointly administered by Peking University and the Beijing Municipal Health Commission. It is a Grade III-A specialist cancer hospital where clinical work and research sit in one institution, and it is the only centre carrying out Beijing's cancer incidence registration and survival statistics and supplying that data to the government and to the WHO.

Its own pages describe two academicians' teams, a gastrointestinal cancer centre and a thoracic cancer centre, behind which the hospital works across gastric, lung, breast, lymphoma, melanoma, colorectal, oesophageal, liver, pancreatic, urinary, gynaecological, head-and-neck and bone-and-soft-tissue cancers, and it was named by the National Health Commission among the first group of hospitals piloting multi-disciplinary cancer care. It holds the national key discipline in oncology, is a national clinical key specialty unit in oncology and pathology, and runs the national key laboratories in digestive-system cancer prevention and molecular oncology. The institute's name was written by Zhu De in December 1975.

What we could not confirm. The hospital's patient-guide page was read in full and names no unit for international patients, and the department index names two VIP wards and no international one; the only international items on the site are a link to the Chinese Journal of Cancer Research and a news item about an academic exchange. So this site records the hospital as publishing no named international unit on the pages we read — a statement about what its pages publish, not a claim that no such service exists inside the hospital. The hospital's own profile does describe its ambition to become an internationalised cancer group centre, and that is quoted as its own words rather than turned into a department. How we found it. The hospital came up through the Fudan specialty reputation ranking, where it holds the fourth position in oncology. The expert index it publishes names 414 clinicians, each with a title, a department and a paragraph; the names recorded here are the academicians the hospital puts on its own page and the clinicians of the VIP ward it publishes, because a romanisation nobody checked character by character would be a worse record than none.
