Best hospitals in China for international patients

There is no published ranking of Chinese hospitals by medical quality, and this site does not produce one. What we can answer is narrower and, if you are not Chinese, more useful: which hospitals are set up to treat you, and how much we have verified about each one.

How this list is built

Of the 121 hospitals we track, we have read each hospital's own pages and found a named international department at 50 of them. The order below is by how much we have verified about each hospital — the same band its own profile shows — not by clinical quality.

Every hospital here is Grade III-A, so accreditation cannot separate them, and we have no quality ranking to offer you instead. What we can offer is the part a foreign patient actually needs: whether the hospital is set up to treat you, and whether the clinicians you would meet have been confirmed to see international patients.

The four checks

A hospital earns a place here by passing checks you can repeat. Each one is a fact read on the hospital's own pages, not a score we invented.

  1. 1.A named international department

We read the hospital's own department index or its international-unit page and found a unit with a name — International Medical Center, International Medical Services, and the other names Chinese hospitals use for them. A hospital that says it has one, with no page we could read, does not qualify.

  2. 2.A page to check, and the day we read it

Every entry carries the hospital's own page and the date we read it. A claim without a link is not a finding.

  3. 3.How much of the hospital we have mapped

Departments, named clinicians, the services they publish and the details they give. This is the measure the order on this page uses.

  4. 4.Clinicians confirmed to see international patients

We only list a clinician as confirmed when the hospital's own page says that person sees international patients. Not every leading doctor has English capacity, and a name on a list is not the same as an appointment.

What this list is not

It is not a ranking of medical quality, and a hospital's absence from it is not a judgement about that hospital. It covers the 121 hospitals we track; China has thousands of Grade III-A hospitals we have not read yet. If the one you need is not here, its own pages are the better source.

Narrowing it down

Four ways to go from here, depending on what you already know.

Questions we are asked

Which is the best hospital in China for international patients?

There is no published ranking of Chinese hospitals by medical quality, and this site does not produce one — every hospital we track is Grade III-A, so accreditation cannot separate them. What we can tell you is which hospitals are set up to treat a foreigner and how much we have verified about each. The four checks above are the whole of it.

How many hospitals in China take international patients?

Of the 121 hospitals we track, we have confirmed a named international department at 50. We also list separately the hospitals where we read the department index and found no named unit, and the ones whose pages we could not read at all — we could not look is not the same as we looked and found nothing.

Does having an international department mean the hospital is good?

No, and we would be wary of any site that implied it did. An international department means the hospital has a unit set up to handle foreign patients, with its own reception and often its own billing. It says nothing about clinical outcomes, and we do not publish outcome data because we cannot source it.

Can I get a diagnosis or a treatment plan from this site?

No. This site publishes what hospitals say about themselves. It does not diagnose, it does not recommend a hospital for a condition, and it does not give medical advice. For any decision about your own treatment, speak to a qualified clinician — the international departments listed here will tell you what they need from you before you travel.

How much does treatment in China cost?

It depends on the procedure, the hospital, and whether you are treated as a private or a public patient. We publish the price schedules we could source, the national cost baselines from the health commission, and the line each price excludes — because a published price is a procedure line, never the bill you will be charged.
