Overview

Founded in 1918 as the Central Hospital, Peking University People's Hospital was the first Western hospital in China funded and run by Chinese people. Its first president was Dr Wu Lien-teh, the physician who controlled the 1910–11 Manchurian plague outbreak — one of the founding figures of modern public health.

It is a Peking University teaching hospital with three academician teams, and its strengths are haematology, thoracic surgery, rheumatology, obstetrics and gynaecology, and orthopaedics. It operates a Department of International Medical Services with published contact details and an English-language website — unusual among Beijing's major public hospitals.

Before you rely on this: The Peking University People's Hospital international department does not take walk-ins: an appointment is made only at the triage desk on its third floor, through your insurance company (which requires a direct-settlement card), or by telephone during weekday office hours of 08:00-11:30 and 13:00-16:30. A first-time patient cannot simply arrive and queue - they must first register a real-name electronic medical code through the hospital's WeChat account, or present an ID card or passport, and then be escorted to a consulting room by a nurse from that triage desk.
