Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology

Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology — 北京大学口腔医学院（口腔医院）, commonly 北大口腔 — was founded in 1941 as the dental clinic of the hospital affiliated to the National Peking University Medical School, and opened in 1942. After the founding of the People's Republic of China its dental school was renamed from 牙医学系 to 口腔医学系 in 1950, the first such approval granted jointly by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education. Its own introduction describes it as a Grade III-A dental specialist hospital directly administered by the National Health Commission (国家卫生健康委委管), playing the part of a national team.

That introduction gives 1,047 dental chairs, 363 open beds, ten branch institutions and more than 3,300 staff, and states that the hospital serves over 2.26 million outpatient and emergency visits a year and admits about 11,700 inpatients a year. It holds all eight of the first batch of national key clinical specialties for dentistry — 牙体牙髓病科、牙周病科、口腔颌面外科、口腔修复科、口腔正畸科、儿童口腔科、口腔黏膜病科、口腔种植科 — and it is the National Oral Medicine Centre that the National Health Commission has appointed to manage and control the quality of national oral medicine specialist care. The same page records that it was the only dental specialist hospital admitted to the national pilot of the modern hospital management system, that it was a designated hospital for the 2008 Beijing Olympics and Paralympics and for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics, and that it was the first dental hospital in China to pass level-five electronic medical record certification, level-4A interoperability certification and ISO 15189 clinical laboratory certification, and the only one to pass level-three smart-hospital certification.

Oral medicine is one of only two national key disciplines in its field, and the hospital produced China's first medical doctorate in 1984 and its first dual-doctorate in oral medicine in 2012; it now has 119 doctoral supervisors and 87 master's supervisors. Its introduction records that it has signed memoranda of academic cooperation with more than forty dental schools overseas, and set up four international training bases which between them have trained 87 young scholars from 25 countries and regions. The main campus is at Weigongcun in Haidian District, and the hospital runs eight outpatient departments, a Huilongguan branch and a Sanya hospital in Hainan, so which site an appointment is at is a real routing question; it publishes a guide to the telephone numbers and addresses of the main hospital and its branch institutions for exactly that reason.
