Founded in 1880 by the Italian Jesuit mission beside St Joseph's Church in Hankow, Wuhan Central Hospital was rated Grade III-A by the Ministry of Health in 1996 and became HUST Tongji Medical College's fifth clinical college in January 2016. It runs about 1,456 beds across 18.6 hectares with more than 1,900 staff.
It is noted for ophthalmology and thyroid surgery, alongside hepatobiliary surgery, gastroenterology, urology, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, thoracic surgery, respiratory, cardiology and neurology. Four senior ophthalmologists at the hospital died of COVID-19 in early 2020 after exposure — a fact worth recording because it says something about the ophthalmology department's standing.
