Overview

Xiangya is one of the two institutions Chinese doctors themselves have long paired as the country's finest, the other being Peking Union Medical College — the saying is "南湘雅,北协和" ("in the south Xiangya, in the north Union"). It was founded on 16 October 1906 by Dr Edward H. Hume of the Yale-China Association as Yali Hospital, one of the earliest Western hospitals in China, and renamed Xiangya in February 1915 when it merged with the co-founded Xiangya Medical College. "Xiangya" is a contraction of 湘 (Hunan) and 雅 (Yale).

It holds 3,500 beds, 111 clinical and medical-technology departments, 5 national key disciplines and 25 national key clinical specialty construction programmes, and hosts the National Health Commission Hepatobiliary & Enteric Studies Research Center.

Its International Medical Center (XIMC) was established in 2014 in cooperation with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, which dispatched a resident management consulting team to participate entirely in its preparation and operation, and opened on 21 July 2015. It adopts JCI medical standard procedures.

Verification note: the hospital's English site returns an anti-bot wall to non-browser clients, and its appointment and services pages load content via JavaScript, so we could not read a direct phone number or email. The centre itself is confirmed from the official English site's structure.

Reputation rankings

Positions and grades as published, with the source and year attached.

This hospital holds a provincially designated Grade III-A, awarded by the province rather than nationally. It is a real designation and a good sign, but it is not the same award as a national Grade III-A, and the two are printed identically on most English hospital listings.

Named clinicians

Which clinicians here actually take international patients — and which are simply senior specialists at a hospital that has an international department.

Cost guidance

Fee figures appear here only where the hospital publishes them. A published price is a price line, never the whole invoice — always confirm a quote directly.
