The Second Xiangya Hospital is, by scale, the largest hospital in Hunan province — 3,630 authorised beds and roughly 5,270 staff — and its distinguishing statistic is that 40 of its 42 clinical departments are national key clinical specialties, an unusually high concentration. It handles around four million outpatient and emergency visits a year.
It was approved in 1956 and opened in 1958.
Two things a patient should know before choosing. First, we could not confirm a named international department — the official site is behind the same anti-bot wall as Xiangya I, and the Xiangya name should not be read as implying one. Second, and more serious: this hospital was the subject of a widely publicised 2022 misconduct case in which surgeon Liu Xiangfeng received a 17-year combined sentence on 31 October 2024 on charges including intentional injury, bribery and embezzlement. A separate 2024 case concerned the death of postgraduate student Luo Shuaiyu; a joint investigation reported on 13 June 2025 maintained the suicide finding and found no irregularities in organ-donation handling. We record this because a medical-tourism page that presented this hospital without that context would be withholding something material.
