Founded on 1 November 1947 by Zhu Kezhen, then president of Zhejiang University, with the famous physician Wang Jiwu as first president, the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine holds two national key disciplines and 27 national key clinical specialties — among the highest counts nationally — and hosts the State Key Laboratory for Infectious Diseases.

It operates six campuses including a major Yuhang campus in the Hangzhou Future Sci-Tech City (phase 1 opened November 2020) and a Zhijiang campus. It is known for organ transplantation, infectious disease, blood disease, kidney disease, anorectal disease and clinical pharmacy, and is among the medical centres with the most complete large-organ transplant programmes in China.
