Founded in 1869 as Guangji Hospital by the Church Missionary Society — and in 1989 it was the pilot that became the first hospital in China to pass the Grade III-A assessment, which is an unusually early and prestigious designation. Its Guangji Medical School, founded 1885, was among the earliest medical schools in China.

It runs six campuses — Jiefang Road, Binjiang, Chengdong, Boao, Eye and Zhida — with particular strength in oncology, ophthalmology, cardiovascular medicine, orthopaedics, neurology and neurosurgery, and emergency medicine — and counts 17 national key clinical specialties and key disciplines.
