Founded on 18 December 1946 as Guangzhou Central Hospital, descended from one of the three wartime National Central Hospitals, and renamed in 1951. It is now run by the Guangdong Provincial Health Commission and is affiliated to Southern Medical University.

It is a national leader in cardiovascular disease, placing sixth nationally in the 2023 Fudan cardiology specialty reputation ranking with an A+++ rating. The Huifu campus additionally runs oncology, psychiatry and psychology, and health screening services. The hospital operates roughly 2,772 beds.

It states that the Provincial Health Commission, the Provincial Healthcare Security Administration and the Provincial Drug Administration jointly published the first batch of 25 international medical service pilot hospitals -- 广东省人民医院 is listed first -- and that 广东省人民医院的国际医疗中心 covers more than 5,000 square metres and has served patients from 151 countries and regions. The Health Commission's own page of the same announcement carries 发布日期 2026-03-31. The hospital's own website publishes no page for the unit, no address for it and no English name for it, so this government page is the evidence that the unit exists.
