Nanfang Hospital is the second of these to have a named overseas-facing unit, and its case is historically the most unusual on the site: the 惠侨医疗中心 (Huiqiao Medical Center), founded in 1979, was China's first medical centre built specifically for overseas Chinese and foreign patients.

That predates every other international department in our database by more than two decades. PUMCH's is 1951 and the earliest of its kind, but Huiqiao is the first *founded for* overseas patients, and it is worth a patient knowing the difference.

Nanfang appears in 8 Fudan 2023 specialty top-tens — third in plastic surgery and fourth in infectious disease — a pairing that makes sense for a hospital that has been treating imported and returning patients for four decades.

Before you rely on this: Foreign and overseas-Chinese patients at Nanfang are routed to the Huiqiao Medical Center, and the hospital's own English guide states that a 30% surcharge is added to every medical service there, on top of the ordinary department rates, with drugs the only exception.
