Overview

Founded on 1 March 1864, Shanghai General Hospital is among the oldest general hospitals in China. In 1992 it was one of the very first batch of Grade III-A general hospitals in the country — a distinction shared with Huashan.

It operates two sites totalling about 295,000 m², with 4,206 staff (570 of them senior-title) and 68 clinical and technical disciplines, and holds a national clinical medical research centre, a Ministry of Education key discipline and eight national key clinical specialty construction programmes. It is known for stem-cell transplantation, cataract and intraocular lens surgery, vitreoretinal surgery and laryngeal malignancy surgery.

International-department status was not researched and we could not confirm one.

Reputation rankings

Positions and grades as published, with the source and year attached.

This hospital holds a municipally designated Grade III-A (上海三级甲等), awarded by the city rather than nationally. It is a real designation and a good sign, but it is not the same award as a national Grade III-A, and the two are printed identically on most English hospital listings.
