The University of Hong Kong–Shenzhen Hospital

For an international patient this is arguably the single most accessible hospital in mainland China. It is the University of Hong Kong's affiliated hospital on the mainland, funded by the Shenzhen Municipal Government but run under a Hong Kong management model, with a board chaired by Shenzhen's Vice Mayor and equal representation from both sides. It is the first mainland public hospital with no staffing establishment quota.

Two details matter disproportionately for a foreign patient. First, it was the first 港澳药械通 pilot institution in January 2021, giving patients in Shenzhen access to medicines approved in Hong Kong that are not yet licensed on the mainland — including targeted cancer drugs such as entrectinib and lorlatinib. Second, it runs a general-practice-first triage model (先全科，后专科) rather than the specialist-queue system used elsewhere, which is far easier for a non-Chinese-speaking patient to navigate.

It achieved Grade III-A in November 2017 and separately holds Australian Council on Healthcare Standards accreditation from September 2015 — a dual-accreditation model that became the basis for Shenzhen's own hospital quality international certification standard.

Before you rely on this: The hospital does not let a patient choose a named doctor when booking: its FAQ states plainly that doctor selection is not permitted and that the hospital will assign a professional medical team. First-time patients are also routed through a general practitioner before a specialty. The one-week booking horizon is the general-practice figure, and the FAQ handles specialty booking on a separate track that needs records from another hospital's diagnosis — so do not read one week as the ceiling for every department. Located in Futian, not at the Shenzhen border — despite the name, it is a 30-40 minute drive from the Hong Kong border crossing. The 港澳药械通 arrangement applies at Shenzhen institutions generally, so confirm eligibility for a specific medicine before relying on it.
