Founded on 11 July 1946 as Bao'an County Health Centre, Shenzhen People's Hospital was the first Grade III-A hospital in the city, rated in 1994. It became a directly affiliated hospital of the Southern University of Science and Technology in 2018 and the Second Clinical College of Jinan University in 2005.
It holds a piece of genuine medical-tourism history: from April 1984 to 1998 it ran a dedicated Overseas Chinese and Hong Kong/Macao ward (华侨港澳病区) specifically for patients from Hong Kong, Macao and foreign countries travelling to Shenzhen for treatment — a direct ancestor of its current international department.
That department was unveiled on 11 January 2026 with a 24,000 m² independent zone offering one-stop internationalised care across outpatient, inpatient and dedicated examinations. The municipal health authority framed it explicitly as serving foreign nationals and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan compatriots.
